Description
Petitioners
John Aylesbury, knight, and John Knyvet, kinsmen and heirs of Ralph Basset of Weldon, knight.
Name(s)
Aylesbury; Knyvet, John; John
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
John Aylesbury and John Knyvet state that they are the true heirs of heirs of Ralph Basset of Weldon, knight, as sons of his father's sisters, as his supposed son and heir, Richard, is not his son at all, but that of Tybot Lowekyn. They sued to the King on this, requesting a writ of mandamus to inquire into the matter, and the King ordered the Chancellor in Easter term last to examine the matter, and to do justice, and when he did not, he again ordered him to do so in Michaelmas term, but again without success. They ask the King again to order the Chancellor a third time to do justice in the present term, as they have sued for two years and more on this.

Note
CCR 1396-9 p.309 is dated 28 April 1398 and p.395 is dated 28 August 1398. These two entries seem to concern a group of manors which coincides only in part with that given in the petition: in any case, they seem to be perhaps slightly later than this petition. A further supersedeas, concerning a manor in Staffordshire, is found in CCR 1396-9 p.91.
