Occupation
The Abbot of St Augustine's, Canterbury
Nature of request
The Abbot of St Augustine's, Canterbury, states that William I gave his church £10 of rent from his manor of Milton in Kent, of which they were seised until the time when John de Florence held the manor for term of life. The Abbot sued a petition in parliament, claiming his right, and was answered that the Chancellor should examine the Abbot's right, and summon Benedict de Fulham, who holds the manor on lease from Queen Philippa, to give his reasons why this rent should not be paid. Benedict, however, states that he is just the farmer of the manor, and cannot charge or discharge it; so they have not taken the matter further in Chancery, but have given the Abbot a day. The Abbot asks the King to order the Chancellor that if he can find, by record, inquisition, or in some other manner, that the rent is due to him, that he might then be paid the rent and its arrears.
