Date

Description
Petitioners
Stephen Aleyn (Alan) of London.
Name(s)
Aleyn (Alan), Stephen
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stephen Aleyn of London states that in the time of the King's father he was granted arrest of goods of the people of the Count of Hainault, for a robbery committed against him, but that full execution was not made of that arrest. He petitioned the parliament at Northampton on this, and letters were written to the Count of Hainault for his restitution. No restitution was made, but Stephen was given the office of 'Bodere' in Dover castle until restitution could be made, at the Count's request. He requests renewal of his commission for this office, or full execution of his arrest.Letters patent of Edward III, dated 1 March 5 Edward III (1331) follow, granting the petitioner the bailiwick of 'Bodere' in Dover castle, during his good behaviour.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that it is just and reasonable that he should have that office or another, or that he should have execution of his said process of arrest.

Note
CPR 1330-4 p.77 is the enrolment of the letters patent included in the petition, dated 1 March 1331. However, the order revoking this grant, CPR 1330-4 p.88, is dated 20 March 1331, less than a month later: apparently the king had forgotten that he had granted this office, which would seem to be that of beadle, to someone else. On 18 June 1334 Stephen was granted the tronage of wools in Boston (CPR 1330-4 p.555). That was not done in response to this petition, as SC 8/30/1489 mentions an earlier petition which would seem to be this one. However, the grant was possibly made in response to SC 8/30/1489.
