Description
Petitioners
John de Aldelose and Joan de Aldelose his wife.
Name(s)
de Aldelose; de Aldelose, John; Joan
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John de Aldelose and Joan his wife, state that Joan had inherited a wood called Sappers Wood and 2s. of rent in Thundersley in Essex, of which she was seised for two years and more until Bartholomew de Badelesmere acquired the manor of Thundersley and disseised her of this wood and rent. He then enfeoffed the King with the manor, so that the wood and rent are now in the King's hand. They ask that the truth may be inquired into, and justice done to them.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege, because the tenements are in the King's hand through feoffment. He is to show the evidence he has for the gift in Chancery, and certain people are to be appointed to inquire into the truth of the whole business; and when the inquisition has been returned, the King is to be informed, and the deeds of Bartholomew are to be searched to see if anything can be found.
Places mentioned
Sopperswode (Sappers Wood), Essex
Thunderle [Thundersley] Essex.
People mentioned
Agatha [Fitz Bernard], wife of Ralph Fitz Bernard
Ralph Fitz Bernard
William le Parker
Bartholomew de Badelesmere (Badlesmere).
Note
Dated with reference to Bartholomew de Badlesmere, who died in 1322. The petitioners seem to stress that the manor is in the King's hand through enfeoffment, rather than forfeiture, which suggests that the petition probably dates from after his death.
