[c. 1363]
Description
Petitioners
Commons of Abingdon.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
The commons of Abingdon state that the present Abbot of Abingdon and his predecessors have accroached to themselves royal power, with extortions and other grievances against them, as is more fully contained in a bill previously delivered to the King's council on this. They were granted an oyer et terminer on this, and but, because the justices found that the panel was procured by the Abbot, his steward, and others of his council, they did not dare to proceed because of the disinheritance to the King, but returned to London. They see no improvement in the situation until a new Sheriff is appointed, who will not be corrupt like the greater part of the powerful men of Berkshire. They request a remedy, in maintenance of the King's right and his poor commons.
Nature of endorsement
They are to sue at common law.
