Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Windsor.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Windsor make two petitions:1) They state that for the last six years mariners who should be paying customs to them in aid of their farm have not paid, claiming that their ships belong to the King. They request a remedy.2) They state that Edmund, formerly Earl of Cornwall, owed them a rent and suit of court for certain tenements he held in Windsor, but that since these tenements have been in the King's hand, they have not been able to have these suit and rent, in aid of their farm. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.It seems to the council that although the ships belong to the King, if the merchandise in them is charged to the mariners or to others than the King, they ought to pay the due customs, so that the King's farm from the said borough is not undermined. With regard to the second petition, they are to have a writ to inquire into their claim, and when the inquisition is returned, the will take advice on how to do justice to them.
