Nature of request
Richard de Wodehous, clerk of the Dublin Exchequer, states that his houses and rents outside the walls of Dublin were burnt on the orders of the people of the city, to protect them against the attack of the Scots, and that his other goods and chattels were carried off by the Scots. In view of his losses and his long service, he asks that he might be pardoned a debt of £80 that he owes the King, or that he might be pardoned part, and pay the rest in instalments.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.When our lord the King sends some great man towards those parts, he will institute an inquiry into the damages and the manner [in which they were incurred]; and then advice will be taken on the matter.
Note
This petition must date from after 1317, the date of the burning of the suburbs of Dublin to prevent cover being given to the Scots. A note at the start of this file, dated 5 May 1932, states that 'Nos. 4351-4364 are copied in R. C. Transcripts I. 156, and appear to form part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320'. This petition is therefore tentatively dated to 1320.
