Description
Petitioners
John de Warenne, Earl Warenne.
Name(s)
de Warenne, Earl Warenne, John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Scotland
High Peak, Derbyshire
Torpel, Northamptonshire
Upton, Northamptonshire.
Nature of request
Earl Warenne states that the King granted him, in part recompense for his service in Scotland, the castle, honour and forest of High Peak, and the manors of Torpel and Upton, to hold for term of life. These lands were taken back into the King's hand by the ordinances, and then, in the King's sixth year, granted back to the Earl with the consent of the ordainers: but two years later they were seized back into the King's hand again, and he has never been able to recover them. He asks that he might have the lands back, and the issues taken from them in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
The causes of the gift and the repossessions, and all the circumstances touching this petition are to be searched for in Chancery and, by a writ, in the Treasury, and the King is to be informed. And he is further to do what he pleases.
Note
A note at the start of this file, dated 3 May 1932, states that 'The petitions in this file are copied in R. C. Transcripts I. 156, and appear to form part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. C 49/5/4 is merely a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited': nevertheless, this petition is tentatively dated to 1320, as many of those in the file that can be dated seem to come from that year.CPR 1313-17 p.38 is dated 14 November 1313.CFR 1307-19 p.140 is dated 25 July 1312 and p.182 is dated 12 November 1313: which seems consistent with the second grant and resumption mentioned in the petition.
