Description
Petitioners
Robert de Veer (Vere).
Name(s)
de Veer (Vere), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Veer states that his lands in Great Tew in Oxfordshire have been seized into the King's hand on the supposition that they were held of the King in chief and alienated without his permission. He has shown his charters proving that this is not true in Chancery, and asked for a remedy, but has been told that the King has given the lands to the Queen and that nothing can be done. He requests a remedy, and the return of his lands.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the charter and the confirmation in Chancery, and those who are of the Queen's council are to be called, and the parties, and they are to be heard, and there is to be an inquiry into the truth if necessary; and justice is to be done.
Places mentioned
Great Tew, Oxfordshire.
People mentioned
Ranulph [de Blundeville], Earl of Chester
Henry [III], King of England
[Isabella of France], Queen of England.
Note
A note at the start of this file, dated 3 May 1932, states that 'The petitions in this file are copied in R. C. Transcripts I. 156, and appear to form part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. C 49/5/4 is merely a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited': nevertheless, this petition is tentatively dated to 1320, as many of those in the file that can be dated seem to come from that year. There is an inspeximus and confirmation of charters for lands in Great Tew in CPR 1317-21 pp.21-22 (13 September 1317).
