Description
Petitioners
Hamo Hethe, Bishop of Rochester.
Name(s)
Hethe, Hamo
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Bishop of Rochester
Nature of request
The Bishop of Rochester makes two complaints against John de Frendesbery, parson of Bromley and John de Wyndesore, parson of Newington, executors of the testament of Thomas, his predecessor:1) He states that Walter de Mertone, formerly Bishop of Rochester, left various implements in the manors of Cobham in Kent and Middleton in Northamptonshire, to remain to the church of Rochester and to his successors, with the King receiving the profits during vacancies, the executors have taken these implements, to the disinheritance of his church.2) He states that they have seized the wardship of Cobham from the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer for the whole period of the vacancy, and have made waste in the woods and allowed the buildings to fall down, contrary to the Great Charter. He requests a remedy for these things.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ of the great seal that, when they have called the parties before them, they are to do justice and reason, both for the King and for them.

Newington, [Kent].
People mentioned
Walter de Mertone (Merton), formerly Bishop of Rochester
John de Frendesbery, parson of Bromley
John de Wyndesore (Windsor), parson of Newington
Thomas [Wouldham], formerly Bishop of Rochester.
Note
Datable to after 1317, with reference to the death of Thomas Wouldham, Bishop of Rochester, in February 1317. A note at the start of this file, dated 3 May 1932, states that 'The petitions in this file are copied in R. C. Transcripts I. 156, and appear to form part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. C 49/5/4 is merely a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited': nevertheless, this petition is tentatively dated to 1320, as many of those in the file that can be dated seem to come from that year.
