Description
Petitioners
William de Roos (Ros) of Helmsley and John de Moubrai (Mowbray).
Name(s)
de Roos (Ros); de Moubrai (Mowbray), William; John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William de Roos of Helmsley and John de Moubrai state that they and several other knights from Yorkshire were at the siege of Knaresborough, and that John de Lilleburn and the others who held the castle had made great destruction in the lands of John de Mauleverer, and John would not surrender the castle without assurance that he would be acquitted of these trespasses. Fearing that the castle would be relieved, they promised this, making an obligation of £200 to John de Mauleverer for his damages: which all those who were of Yorkshire granted would be levied from the community of the county. John de Mauleverer is now impleading them for this money. They ask to be acquitted of this money, as they did this for the King's advantage and to save his castle.

Note
CIM 1307-49 no.392 finds that John de Lilleburn occupied Knaresborough castle between 5 October 11 Edward II [1317] and 29 January following. A note at the start of this file, dated 3 May 1932, states that 'The petitions in this file are copied in R. C. Transcripts I. 156, and appear to form part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. C 49/5/4 is merely a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited': nevertheless, this petition is tentatively dated to 1320, as many of those in the file that can be dated seem to come from that year.
