Reference
SC 8/86/4287
Date
[? 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Philip de Melton.
Name(s)
de Melton, Philip
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Philip de Melton states that he held the office of Crier in the King's Bench by the gift of Roger le Brabanzon, and that he was expelled from this without reason. He petitioned parliament, and was told to sue for a writ in Chancery to Henry le Scrop, to reinstate him: for which nothing was done. Then the King and Queen sent letters to the Mayor of London, asking for another office in London for him: and nothing was done for this either. He requests a remedy for his estate.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be known of the justices if those who are now in place are suitable: and if they are, the King does not wish to expel them.[A further endorsement, 'coram rege', is found on the dorse of SC 8/86/4290.]
People mentioned
Roger le Brabanzon
Henry le Scrop (le Scrope)
[Isabella of France], Queen of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1319, as apparently enclosing the three subsequent writs, and by SCCKB, vol. V pp.cxx-i (entry f) to shortly after May 1319, on the same grounds. A note inserted into this file, written by R. L. Atkinson on 3 May 1932, reads, 'Nos. 4270-4300 are copied in R.C. Transcripts I 156, and apparently from part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. C 49/5/4 is merely a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited': nevertheless, this petition is tentatively dated to 1320, as many of those in the file that can be dated seem to come from that year.
