Reference
SC 8/86/4286
Date
[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Mehermer.
Name(s)
de Mehermer, Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ralph de Mehermer states that although he holds the manor of Stokenham in Devon in chief of the King, of the King's gift, Hugh de Cortynai, claiming that it is held of him, is harassing him by a petition he presented in parliament for services and customs due to him for the manor, removing the King from his lordship. He asks for a remedy, that he might not be charged with these customs and services, in prejudice to the King, to himself, and to his sons.
Nature of endorsement
A search is to be instituted at the Exchequer and in Domesday, and there is to be an inquiry in all possible ways into by what services Matthew Fitz John held the aforesaid manor, before he enfeoffed the King's father with it; and the King, informed of this, will do what reason requires. And Hugh de Cortynai has been told to cease harrassing Ralph de Mehermer, tenant of the said manor, in order to demand any service from him for the same manor.
Places mentioned
Stokenhampine (Stokenham), Devon.
People mentioned
Thomas [de Mehermer], son of petitioner
Edward [de Mehermer], son of petitioner
Hugh de Cortynai (Courtenay)
Matthew Fitz John
[Edward I], King of England.
Note
A Latin summary of a petition from Hugh de Courtenay, claiming that this manor was held from him, is enrolled on the roll of the parliament of January 1315. This petition seems likely to date from shortly afterwards, and despite the French endorsement, would seem to be earlier than the 1320 date given for the rest of the file.CCR 1307-13 p.510 reveals that the King granted the manor to the petitioner and his sons on 16 September, in the third year of his reign (1309).
