Reference
SC 8/86/4283
Date
[1320]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Meaux.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of Meaux
Nature of request
The Abbot of Meaux states that as a result of a petition presented at the parliament held at York three weeks after Michaelmas in the king's twelfth year, he was granted an allowance for a sum owed to him by the king in the tithe then current and in arrears of other tithes. A writ was sent to the Abbot of Selby, collector of the tithe, to cease demanding it, but he did not, but had the money the Abbot of Meaux owed for that tithe assigned to John Darcy. As he did not have an allowance in that tithe, he asks that he might have one in the tithe for the next year, or in the current tithe.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be seen in Chancery if such an allowance as the petition claims was granted to the same abbot, and if so, and he has not yet had it, a writ is to be issued to him according to the form of the petition.
Places mentioned
York
Meaux, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
The Abbot of Selby
John Darcy.
Note
A Latin summary of the petition is enrolled on the roll of the parliament of Michaelmas 1320 (Rot. Parl. vol. I, pp.372b-373a (no.18)). This would tally with there having been two tithes since the parliament of October 12 Edward II (1318). However, Rot. Parl. vol. I, pp.372b-373a (no. 18) says that the original petition was delivered to a parliament at Easter, 12 Edward II.
