Description
Petitioners
Gilbert de Lutegarshale (Ludgershall), notary public.
Name(s)
de Lutegarshale (Ludgershall), Gilbert
Addressees
King.
Occupation
notary public
Nature of request
Gilbert de Lutegarshale, notary public, states that because of an instrument that he drew up for the king at Langley on 20 October in the king's fifth year, shortly afterwards, when he was passing through the country of Gloucester, John Talebot, William his brother, and William, now parson of the church of Westbury near Gloucester, attacked him, cut off his horse's ears, and wounded him so badly that they left him for dead. As a result he is maimed for life. Because the king told him when he drew up the instrument that if he ever wanted anything from him he was to ask for it boldly, he requests the king's letters for a livery in Hyde abbey or Winchester priory, in relief of his poverty and ill-health.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. There is to be an inquiry into whether he received this harm because of the instrument that he drew up against their estates, and the king is to be advised on this.

Note
A note inserted into this file, written by R. L. Atkinson on 3 May 1932, reads, 'Nos. 4270-4300 are copied in R.C. Transcripts I 156, and apparently from part of an original file of petitions to the parliament of Michaelmas 1320. Cf. Parl. Proc. (Chancery) 5/4'. If this dating were true in this case, it would be some years since the attack, which took place shortly after 20 October, 5 Edward II (1311), so it must be questionable. However, the French endorsement and the signature of the clerk William de Herlaston (C 49/5/4 is a label, 'The petitions of William de Herlaston from the King's parliament held at Westminster at the octave of Michaelmas in his fourteenth year, which were answered by the auditors of petitions, delivered into Chancery to be expedited') would seem to argue for the later date.
