Description
Petitioners
Thomas Porthaleyn and Alice Porthaleyn his wife.
Name(s)
Porthaleyn; Porthaleyn, Thomas; Alice
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and incomplete.]Thomas Porthaleyn and Alice his wife, formerly the wife of Richard Shipley, state that on the Monday before the Nativity of Our Lady in the King's twenty-fourth year, when Alice was returning from a pilgrimage to the chapel of Our Lady of Muswell, she was attacked and robbed at Highgate by William Gargrave and other malefactors, who abducted her and forced her to marry William; and on the same Monday they assaulted her sister, Helen Hertwell, and stole a horse belonging to Alice. And these malefactors have no fear of the King's laws, although this was done in time of parliament, within three miles of London. They request a writ of Chancery to make proclamation at Westminster that William Gargrave and the others are to appear before King's Bench on the day of return of the writ, to answer for this felony and trespass.
