Reference
SC 8/85/4233
Date
[1394]
Description
Petitioners
Robert Knolles (Knoll); John de Cobeham (Cobham) of Kent.
Name(s)
Knolles (Knoll); de Cobeham (Cobham), Robert; John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Kent
Rochester, [Kent]
Strood, [Kent].
Nature of request
Robert Knolles and John de Cobeham of Kent state that they have replaced the old bridge between Rochester and Strood, which was becoming unsafe, with a new stone bridge, at their own cost. They ask the King and council to ordain for the repair and upkeep of this bridge that the people, vills, and other places in Kent that were responsible for the upkeep of the old bridge, each for a section of the bridge as is set out in the schedule attached to this petition, might be responsible for the new bridge, and might choose two wardens of the bridge annually to oversee this upkeep, as they did for the old one, under the advice and ordinance of the petitioners. They also ask that the wardens might acquire by testament lands, tenements and rents to an annual value of 500 marks, for the upkeep of the bridge; and that if the wardens implead others or are impleaded concerning anything belonging to this bridge, that all writs should be in the names of the wardens and continue to be effectual when individual wardens leave office.
Nature of endorsement
The King, with the assent of parliament, has granted this petition in all points, excepting only the sum of 500 marks to be purchased: of which sum the King has granted 300 marks, with the aforesaid assent.
Note
SC 8/86/4255, also making provisions for the new bridge at Rochester, can be dated to 1395 by CPR 1391-6 p.550, and mentions a petition presented to the previous parliament by Robert Knolles and John de Cobham, which resulted in a grant of £200 (300 marks) of lands and rent to support the new bridge. This would therefore appear to be that petition, presented to the parliament of January 1394.
