SC 8/85/4216
Date

Description
Petitioners
Eleanor de Ferrers.
Name(s)
de Ferrers, Eleanor
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioner states that Earl William de Ferrers the elder married Anneys, daughter of Randolph, Earl of Chester, and that they had two sons, William and Thomas. Anneys gave her manor of Chartley to Thomas, who was seised of it until his brother William died. Robert, the next Earl impleaded him for it, but it the end an agreement was reached whereby Thomas would keep Chartley and have the homages and lordships of Sandon as well. Thomas died seised of these, and Eleanor, the petitioner, was endowed with the whole manor of Chartley. She was seised until the death of William le Botiler, one of the parceners, then Lord Edmund disseised her of it by force. As it is part of the inheritance of John de Ferrers, who is under age and in his keeping, so she asks the King that he might not be disinherited.
Nature of endorsement
Because Lord Edmund answers that he is seized of the fees, therefore she is to take action for herself by writ.
Places mentioned
Chartley, [Staffordshire]
Sandon, [Staffordshire].
People mentioned
William de Ferrers, Earl [of Derby], the elder
Anneys (Agnes) [de Ferrers], wife of William de Ferrers
Randolph, Earl of Chester
William [de Ferrers], Earl [of Derby], son of William and Anneys de Ferrers
Thomas [de Ferrers], son of William and Anneys de Ferrers
Robert [de Ferrers], Earl [of Derby]
William le Botiler
Edmund of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster
John de Ferrers.
Note
The petitioner is evidently Eleanor, widow of Robert de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, and since Robert is referred to as having died recently, presumably the petition dates to shortly after his death in 1279. Given that the endorsement refers to a response from 'Lord Edmund', evidently Edmund of Lancaster, brother of Edward I, it must pre-date his death in 1296, and also clearly pre-dates John de Ferrers's coming of age in 1293 (Complete Peerage, V, p.306). The William le Botiler mentioned as having died may be the man of that name who died in 1283 (CIPM, vol.II, no.529).
