Reference
SC 8/85/4213
Date
[? c. 1404]
Description
Petitioners
Edward of York, Duke of York.
Name(s)
York, Duke of York, Edward
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Edward, Duke of York, son and heir of Edmund, Duke of York, states that his father was granted an annuity from the customs and subsidies of Kingston upon Hull and London by Richard II, until he could be provided for in lands and other possessions, but that an ordinance in the king's recent parliament at Westminster means that the Duke can no longer receive this annuity. He requests letters under the great seal authorising him to continue to receive this annuity.
Nature of endorsement
The king, with the assent of the lords spiritual and temporal, wills that the aforesaid Edward Duke of York, and the heirs male of the body of Edmund, formerly Duke of York, his father, may have, take and receive both the £400 annually in the port of Kingston upon Hull, and the £289 6s 8d annually in the port of London, together with all the arrears from the day of the death of the said Duke, from the customs of wools, hides and wool-fells in the same ports, by the hands of the customs officers, collectors, farmers, receivers or other occupiers of the same custom only, in the same manner and form as they were granted to the said former Duke to be received from the customs and subsidies in the same ports, as is contained in this same petition.
Places mentioned
Westminster
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
London.
People mentioned
Edmund [of Langley], Duke of York
Richard II, King of England.
Note
Though this petition could feasibly have been presented across a range of years at the start of the fifteenth century, its reference to an ordinance recently made at a parliament held at Westminster, which restricted the distribution of annuities, makes it likely that the petition was presented in the period following the parliament of January 1404 when the king was forced to cut back on the payment of annuities.
