Description
Petitioners
Commons of Yorkshire, Northumberland, Westmorland, Cumberland, Lancashire, Cheshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, the diocese of Durham, and all the parts of the north.
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that it was ordained at the king's last parliament that the Master of the Mint in the Tower of London would come to York, to coin the gold and silver of the country which was of defective weight, remaining there at the king's pleasure; but that he has now left again, leaving the people of the north to use defective coins, contrary to the ordinance made in the parliament of 9 Henry V. They ask that he might return to York to coin there, and that he might leave behind a suitable deputy, for whom he would be pleased to answer; and also that it might be ordained by statute that all coin of defective weight should be taken to York castle, to be newly coined there, before next Michaelmas; and that no coin of defective weight should then have validity, in their counties or elsewhere in the realm; and that this should be proclaimed throughout the realm.
