Name(s)
Gonsalves; Skyerde; de Castalis; Nocte, Peter; Peter; John; Peter
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, Guardian of England.
Occupation
ships' masters
Nature of request
The petitioners state, on their own behalf and that of their merchants, that their ships were loaded in Lisbon with goods for Sluis by Portuguese and Flemish merchants, but that as they were travelling to Sluis, their ships were seized off Winchelsea on 19 June last by John Darrundell, at the king's command, and told to wait in the downs of Sandwich, until they had permission from the Duke of Gloucester to sail. They are waiting there now, at their great expense and peril, and ask for permission to sail, as the Portuguese have always been friendly to England.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Portugal
Sluys (Sluis), [Netherlands]
Flanders
Lusshbon (Lisbon), [Portugal]
Winchelsea, [Sussex]
Sandwich, [Kent].
People mentioned
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester, Guardian of England
John Darrundell (Arundel), knight.
Note
Dated to 1420 by the reference to the Duke of Gloucester as Guardian of England and to John de Arundel. A note on the guard suggests that it may be from early in the reign of Henry VI: the fact that Arundel was acting 'par comandement depar le Roy Dengleterre' might suggest orders from Henry V in France: but it might merely suggest that he gave his instructions in the King's name.
