SC 8/85/4207
Date
[c. 1442]
Description
Petitioners
John Sutton, Lord Dudley, knight.
Name(s)
Sutton, Lord Dudley, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John, Lord Dudley states that although William Brymyncham held the manor of Birmingham of his castle of Dudley by knight service, and by various other services, inquisitions held before the escheator in the King's second and fourteenth years found that the manor was held of the King in chief: with the result that he has lost his possession of these services. He has long sued to recover them, and has at last had a decision in his favour, but the justices will not proceed to judgment. He asks that he might be restored to his services, and the king's hand removed, by authority of the present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] The commons have assented to this bill.[On dorse] The king, with the advice and assent of the lords spiritual and temporal, and the commons of his realm of England, present in this present parliament, and by authority of the same parliament, has granted this petition, and wills and grants, by the same advice and assent and by the same authority, that it should be done in all points as is desired by the same petition.
Places mentioned

Dudley, [Warwickshire]

Elizabeth, [de Clinton], Lady Clinton
Thomas Bateman, escheator of Warwickshire
Edmund Ferrers, knight.
Note
CPR 1436-41 pp.502-3 is dated 16 November 1440. However, it would seem not to be the response to this petition, but to a previous petition delivered by the petitioner (as he says here), which resulted in a commission to inquire into the matter. This petition would then be slightly later, and as it requests a remedy by authority of parliament, was probably presented to the parliament of 1442.
