Reference
SC 8/84/4198
Date
[c. 1422-c. 1437]
Description
Petitioners
John Cokeworthy; William . . .ubbes; Denis Gabriell.
Name(s)
Cokeworthy; . . .ubbes; Gabriell, John; William; Denis
Addressees
Lords and commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners, the executors of the testament of Richard Gabriell request remedy as they are still charged for a sum due from the issues of an alien priory at Exeter called St James outside Exeter entrusted to Richard Gabriell and to Hukelegh of which 19 marks from the farm was subsequently granted to the queen as dower . . . Hukelegh and his heir, executors and assigns have been acquitted of the sum.
Nature of endorsement
Let a commission be directed to certain persons to establish the value of the priory and certify the council. And if it is found that the value is sufficient for the payment of the queen and to render the other sum to the king then let the petitioners be chargeable. If the sum is not sufficient to pay the two sums beyond a reasonable sum for the trouble of the petitioners, then the council by the authority of parliament ordains the discharge of the petitioners at their discretion.
Places mentioned
Exeter, Devon.
People mentioned
Richard Gabriell, late Master of the Chancery
Richard Hukelegh
Joan [of Navarre], Queen of England.
Note
The address of this petition, to the Lords and Commons, and its written hand suggests it dates to the fifteenth century. References to Joan of Navarre and to Henry, father of the present king, suggests the petition dates to the first decades of Henry VI's reign.
