Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/84/4180
Date
[c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Bertram de Baleiss, Burgess of Bayonne.
Name(s)
de Baleiss, Bertram
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Burgess of Bayonne
Nature of request
Baleiss requests that the king read his letters of testimony of the mayor, jurors and council of Bayonne concerning the debt owed to him by Saintes, and the seizure of his goods by evil allegation, and that he will order his lieutenant that he is to have his letters of debt and recover the payments, and have other letters to the people of Bayonne so that he can have recovery of the goods there arrested by the name of Saintes.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition the king has found by letters of the earl of Lincoln that the money belonged to Saintes and he is withholding money from the king, so the king is retaining the money. And concerning the second, let it be ordered to the lieutenant in Gascony that the goods that he is able to prove by loyal men to be his own be delivered.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
William de Sant (Saintes)
[Henry de Lacy], Earl of Lincoln.
Note
The reference to the earl of Lincoln would seem to relate to his period of service in Gascony between 1295 and 1298. It seems likely that the petition dates to shortly after this, and a speculative dating of c. 1300 has been adopted.
