Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of Lichfield.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This is mostly a summary of earlier process by the dean and chapter and Lichfield, reciting an earlier petition and several charters and a writ.]The dean and chapter presented a petition at the parliament of Northampton requesting that the king's collation of Richard de Hanyngfeld to the church of Cannock, Hanyngfeld claiming it to be a prebend of Penkridge. This was answered that the parties should come and have justice done to them. Chelmsford came and stated that Richard I granted the same to Bishop Hugh de Nonant who granted the churches of Rugeley and Cannock to the dean and chapter:1) Copy of a charter of Richard I granting the vills of Rugeley and Cannock with the churches and hundreds and all other liberties to Bishop Hugh.2) Copy of a charter of Henry III confirming the grant of Richard I.3) Copy of a charter of Bishop Hugh.[Continued on dorse]The parties were given a day at which Chelmsford came and Hanyngfeld did not, and Chelmsford requested that the collation be revoked.Copy of a writ of Edward III to the sheriff of Staffordshire to summon Hanyngfeld to be in Chancery at a certain day to show why his collation to Cannock should not be revoked. [The process is continued] He did not come therefore it was considered that the collation should be revoked and the dean and chapter were without a day.

Note
This document contains several copies of earlier documents so that its potential date range is wide, c. 1189-c. 1328. The copies of charter are mostly dated, and the earliest is from December 1 Rich. I (1189), and the last document, the writ of Edward III is dated to 22 May 2 Edw. III (1328). The document obviously postdates this last copy, but is unlikely to be too long after.
