Date
[c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Our Lady of Carlisle.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that the king pardon them the account and the debt they owe him for victuals which they had in their keeping and used as they have been ruined by the Scottish wars, and because the king has granted a pardon of the debt that the people of Cumberland, Westmorland and Northumberland for victuals bought in the time of the king's father. They are now distrained in the Exchequer to account for the victuals.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.2) They are to have respite to the feast of Michaelmas next and meanwhile they are to come before the king and have grace.
Places mentioned
Carlisle, [Cumberland]
Cumberland
Westmorland
Northumberland.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1334 when the prior was given respite (CCR 1333-7, p.306). However, there is another similar petition by the same petitioners, which dates to 1334, and this has an identical response. It seems unlikely that they are different versions of the same basic petition, so this petition may be a little later.
