SC 8/84/4165
Date
[1365]
Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of the church of St Peter, Exeter.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The dean and chapter request remedy from the king so that they and their vicars are able to serve God in peace and without disturbance as they as they are pursued in the court of Rome and in the king's court concerning the disputed presentation to the archdeaconry of Cornwall, and they can do nothing without doing contempt to one or the other.
Nature of endorsement
He who holds the archdeaconry does not hold it of the king, and if de Cusance, who has the archdeaconry by the king's collation and with whom . . . was made, is dead, and the right of the king of the collation plainly executed, it seems to the council that the king ought not to meddle more in this business, and the process be stopped, and the prohibitions and attachments made upon it repealed, and he who is in possession should sue in court Christian if he wishes.
Places mentioned
Exeter, [Devon]
Cornwall
Rome, [Italy].
People mentioned
William de Cusance, Archdeacon of Cornwall
Nicholas de Neuton, Archdeacon of Cornwall
Thomas David, Archdeacon of Cornwall.
Note
The petition apparently dates to 1365 as an order to Nicholas de Neuton who is the individual referred to in the response to the petition, to proceed in the ecclesiastical court seems to tally with the details in the response (CPR 1364-8, pp.125-6).
