Reference
SC 8/84/4152
Date
[1323-1326]
Description
Petitioners
People of the three hundreds of Chiltern in Buckinghamshire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people request that a commission of oyer and terminer be assigned to destroy the false alliance of Weedon who was indicted before Cammoys in another oyer and terminer of many felonies but no execution was made and many felonies were concealed by the maintenance of the Despensers and Baldok, and by the brokage of Towcester and Laghman.
Nature of endorsement
Each of them who feels himself aggrieved should aid himself by the common law.
Places mentioned
Three hundreds of Chiltern, Buckinghamshire.
People mentioned
Ralph de Wedone (Weedon), knight
Ralph de [Cammoys] Juustice
Hugh Despenser, the father
Hugh Despenser, the son
Robert Baudok (Baldock), Chancellor
John Toucestre (Towcester)
Simon Laghman.
Note
The petition is particularly strange as it seems to be made within the reign of Edward II as the Despensers appear to still be alive, and Baldock is chancellor, and yet a petition that complains so openly of the excesses of these figures before their fall is unusual and more usually located in the first years of Edward III's reign. The petition can date to 1323-1326 when Baldock was chancellor, but is likely to be in the latter part of this range.
