Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/83/4149
Date
[c. 1351]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Cumpton (Compton); Thomas Bakere (Baker), chaplain.
Name(s)
de Cumpton (Compton); Bakere (Baker), Thomas; Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Cumpton and Bakere request that the record returned into the Exchequer by the escheator of Bedfordshire concerning the manor of Meppershall be examined and that a writ be ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they are able to have the manor and their goods and chattels again, and the escheator remove his hand. The manor is in the king's hand by error following the indictment of John de Meppershall for the death of John Legat, when he has no right in the manor and it pertains to the petitioner.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be ordered to the escheator to enquire upon the points in this petition, and if Meppershall gave himself into fraud and deceit to cheat the king of his escheat and his advantage that did not have in this part, and when the truth has been enquired of, let justice and reason be done there.
Places mentioned
Meppershall, Bedfordshire.
People mentioned
John de Meperteshale (Meppershall)
John Legat.
Note
The petition dates c. 1351 as it clearly dates slightly after the copy of a writ and certification that were formerly attached to which date to 1351 (SC 8/83/4150).
