Nature of request
The people request remedy as they are charged outrageously to reside in the castles of those parts when the enemy are in power, despite it being ordered that they ought not to be charged. Otherwise they will be forced to leave the land.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by a writ containing the things in this petition and all other agreements in such cases to suffer to make . . . Let it be ordered . . . that they make agreements and . . . and that other agreements made before now . . .

There is no internal or external evidence positively to date this petition, so it has been tentatively dated to the second half of Edward II's reign (c. 1314-c. 1327) on the assumption that this is the period most likely to have generated this type of complaint when Scottish cross border raiding was a regular occurrence in the north of England.
