Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Croyland (Crowland).
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Croyland (Crowland)
Nature of request
The abbot requests remedy as he has been amerced in two sums as a baron though he does not hold as a baron or of a barony but of free alms by the foundation of the king's progenitors, and has asked for this to be enquired of by the Book of Fees and Domesday, and following the enquiry the treasurer and barons still did not wish to discharge him.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer . . . upon the contents in the petition to do justice to the abbot . . . if necessary calling to them the justices of the Bench . . . and let it be ordered to them that they command that the abbot . . .2) He should wait . . .

Note
The petition must date to around c. 1322. A writ was issued to the justices of the Bench concerning the resolution of the matter complained about in the petition. This may be in direct response to the petition, but could mark a later stage on from it, so that the petition possibly dates to a short while before (CCR 1318-23, pp.442-3).
