Reference
SC 8/83/4139
Date
[c. 1330-c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Croyland (Crowland).
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request remedy as it was adjudged at the last eyre of Northamptonshire that the abbot had sold a small piece of free land to his villeins of Wellingborough against the Statute of Mortmain. The land has been extended and the sum for each year since the purchase levied from them though they don't have anything for the purchase, nor is it against the Statute.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that when they have viewed the record and process for the eyre concerning this business, if they find by the record that the lands were taken for this reason let it be ordered by writ of the Exchequer to the sheriff that he make answer for the lands to the Exchequer, and that he answer for the issues of the land at the Exchequer, and that they discharge the abbot both of the issues of the land and the rent.
Places mentioned
Croyland (Crowland), [Lincolnshire]
Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
Note
There is no internal or external evidence with which to date this petition. It has been assigned to this span of years on the basis of its general appearance, its hand writing style, and the fact that Northamptonshire was visited by the eyre in 1329-30.
