Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of the commotes of Arllechwedd Isaf, Arllechwedd Uchaf, Nant Conwy and Creuddyn.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The commonalty request the felon and outlaw Gogh did not commit any offence in the four commotes, that they should not be subject to the penalty imposed on them by the chamberlain of Caernarfon. The justice of Wales, because of the many robberies and other offences made by Gogh, had ordered the commonalty to take Gogh alive or dead on the penalty that if he committed a further offence in the commotes they would pay a substantial fine. He did not commit another robbery, but ap Tudor, to escape the fine, pursued Gogh and killed him outside of the commotes. Notwithstanding this the chamberlain has imposed the fine and grievously distrained them.
Nature of endorsement
Because the justice is called before the council, it is recorded that the felon after the imposition of the penalty, did not commit any robbery within the commotes, and that he was taken and beheaded outside the commotes by ap Tudor, but before he was killed, and after the imposition of the penalty took and detained outside of the commotes a villein of the king who was rescued by the justice. This is not the cause of the penalty. It is considered by the council that the men of the commote ought to be discharged of the penalty and should have a writ to the chamberlain that they should be discharged.

Note
The guard notes speculatively date this petition to? 1320 on the basis of the dating of a number of other petitions in this file. Rees is more cautious in the dating, making it? 1308-1320 based on the period of Mortimer's tenure of the office of justice of Wales (Petitions Relating to Wales, pp.120-1).
