Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/82/4097
Date
[? 1320]
Description
Petitioners
John Hotham, Bishop of Ely.
Name(s)
Hotham, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Ely
Nature of request
Hotham requests a remedy since Pecche who held several knight's fees from the bishop's predecessors and his church sold them to Edward I, and the bishop and his predecessors have been unable to have the services or profits from them despite petitions to earlier parliaments.1)
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered that if they are able to find that the fees are in the king's hand, and that the fees are held of the bishopric of Ely as the petition supposes, then they are to make an extent of those fees and certify the king of it, and the king will do justice.2) Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Madingley, Cambridgeshire
Rampton, Cambridgeshire
Impington, Cambridgeshire
Cottenham, Cambridgeshire.
People mentioned
Gilbert Pecche.
Note
The petition is difficult to date. The matter was obviously of long standing as previous bishops had petitioned on this same matter. This petition has been identified as being by Bishop John Hotham, but it is possible that it was by John Ketton, his immediate predecessor. The date of? 1320 has been opted for on the basis that most of the rest of the file seems to date to 1320, though this is speculative and is open to question.
