Reference
SC 8/82/4058
Date
[? 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Simon Bolet, late sheriff of London; executors of Geoffrey de Condut, late sheriff of London and companion of Simon Bolet.
Name(s)
Bolet, Simon
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
sheriff of London
Nature of request
The petitioners request remedy as they cannot have allowance at the Exchequer for the expenses paid to 12 chandlers that they were ordered to send to Burgh by the treasurer because they do not have warrants.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that when they have viewed the letters of the bishop, if they find that he paid the money, then it is to be allowed in his account.
Places mentioned
London
Burgh by Sands, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Geoffrey de Condut, late sheriff of London
Walter de Langetone (Langton), Bishop of Chester (Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield) and treasurer of Edward I.
Note
The petition refers to events in the 35th year of Edward I, the sheriffs serving from Michaelmas 1306 to Michaelmas 1307 (List of Sheriffs, p.201). The petition is clearly later, as the individuals are no longer sheriffs, and indeed one has died. In addition, Walter Langton appears to still be alive at the time of the making of this petition, so it cannot be later than November 1321, and cannot be earlier than 1312 when Langton was last treasurer. The petition can therefore date from c. 1312 to 1321, which does, of course, not rule out 1320.
