Reference
SC 8/82/4052
Date
[? 1319-? 1320]
Description
Petitioners
William de Bereford.
Name(s)
de Bereford, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bereford requests that the chancellor be ordered to make a writ de Liberate to the treasurer that his clerks of the Common Bench are paid their wages which were agreed by an agreement made with Bereford, as they are in arrears for 8 years, and they are put to great labour but have nothing to live on, and the treasurer will not pay them without a command from the king.1)
Nature of endorsement
The king and council consider that the rolls of Chancery and the Wardrobe should be examined, and if it can be found that the fee was enrolled then let a writ Liberate for the clerks within written, and if the fee is not found, then he should sue for the record of the archbishop of Canterbury and Despenser who made the agreement for the king with Bereford, and certify this in Chancery, or because the labours of the clerks continue in the Bench the petition is to be brought in the next parliament coram rege et consilio, and there let it be ordained and determined according to justice.2) Let the rolls be searched, and the king is to have certification, and then say his will on this.3) The transcript of the first petition sued at York and answered there as appears above.
Places mentioned
York.
People mentioned
William de Cestrefeud (Chesterfield), clerk of estreats
[Walter Reynolds], Archbishop of Canterbury
Hugh Despenser, the elder.
Note
A note at the beginning of file 82 states that all of the petitions in this file appear to belong to the year 1320. The dating of a duplicate of this petition from additional material included at a later date in that petition suggests that a date of 1320 is very likely. This petition is possibly slightly earlier, as the duplicate has additional material which suggests that it is at a later point in the process of determination, but the petition refers to a parliament at York which would make this 1319 or 20 (SC 8/82/4051).
