Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/81/4050
Date
[1315-1322]
Description
Petitioners
John de Benham; Alice de Benham, wife of John de Benham.
Name(s)
de Benham; de Benham, John; Alice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Benhams request remedy as they have been delayed for three years or more from the bailiwick that was Alice de Benham's inheritance. She is the daughter and heir of Henry de Edmundsthorpe, and after his death the bailiwick of Wittingley Forest and Freemantle Park were taken into the king's hand because of her age. The bailiwick was granted to Alice de Edmundsthorpe but she was ousted by Despenser and the bailiwick is now in the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
Edmundsthorpe's inquisition post mortem is to be examined, and also the keeper of the Forest should enquire of the truth of the matter and certify the king so that he can do what ought to be done.
Places mentioned
Wittingley Forest, [Hampshire]
Freemantle Park, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
Henry de Edmundestrop (Edmundsthorpe), father of Alice de Benham
Alice [de Edmundestrop (Edmundsthorpe)], widow of Henry de Edmundsthorpe, and mother of Alice de Benham
Hugh le Despenser, late Justice of the Forest.
Note
The note on the guard dates this to 1320 on the basis that many of the petitions in this file seem to have been around this date. The petition has to be after 19 February 1315 when Despenser was replaced keeper of the forest, but is likely to be earlier than 1322 as the petition is answered in Latin and not in French (CFR 1307-19, p.230).
