Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/81/4049
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
John de Bermyngham (Bermingham).
Name(s)
de Bermyngham (Bermingham), John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
County Louth, [Ireland]
Scotland
County Kildare, [Ireland].
Nature of request
1) Bermyngham requests that County Louth which the king granted to him and his heirs male be granted the franchise that County Kildare has so that he is able to reside there and govern it, as, hitherto, he has been unable to do because of Scottish incursions. 2) He further requests that it be granted that the debts that he owes to the king in Louth be allowed for the great costs that he has incurred against the Scottish and Irish enemies.
Nature of endorsement
The Council of parliament does not assent. 2) Coram rege only because it is a matter of pure grace.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1320 as a grant of the earldom and county of Louth with the liberties as the earls of Kildare have in Co. Kildare was made on 12 May 1319 (CPR 1317-21, p.335). However, this seems to be the grant made to Bermingham and referred to in the petition, so that the petition is perhaps a little later than 1319, probably 1320, along with many other petitions in this file.
