Reference
SC 8/81/4025
Date
[1319-1323]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of St Mary, York.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of St Mary, York
Nature of request
The abbot requests a remedy as one of his monks granted certain tithes to Ridel on condition that he found surety for the payment of £50, but he did not wish to do this and took the tithes by force and arms for the maintenance of the castle. The offence happened in the liberty of Durham, but concerns royal officials so he requests remedy from the king.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to William Ridel that if it is thus then he should satisfy the abbot of the debt so that the king will not hear of this plea again, adding that the king ordered elsewhere that the tithes were not to be taken for such a use.
Places mentioned
York
Barnard Castle, [County Durham].
People mentioned
William Ridel, keeper of the castle Barnard Castle
Note
The petition is dated on the basis of Fraser's notes to 1319-1323 when Ridel was keeper of the castle of Barnard Castle (Northern Petitions, pp.252-3 (no.187)). This confirmed by fine roll entries for the appointment and replacement of Ridel (CFR 1319-27, pp.4, 219).
