Reference
SC 8/81/4023A
Date
[c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior requests justice as the king was not accustomed to meddle in the lands of the Hospital or take the issues or profits until the time of Prior Tibertis who was forced to make fealty to the king because he was an alien, and now following Talerter's death the lands have been taken into the king's hand and the prior was told by the council to find surety for the issues and to sue for the chancellor to search the rolls of Chancery.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered by writ to the treasurer, barons and chamberlains to search the rolls and certify the king in Chancery concerning the matter, and if they find that it is as the petition alleges then the prior and his mainpernors should be discharged of the mainprise and issues, with an order to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to supersede all things concerning the fealty and issues.
People mentioned
Thomas Larch, late Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem
Leonard Tibertis, late Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1335, as the petition dates to after SC 8/81/4023B, though it seems unlikely that it would be too long after this writ.
