Reference
SC 8/81/4006
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Ver (Vere), Earl of Oxford.
Name(s)
de Ver (Vere), Earl of Oxford, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ver requests that it be commanded that his body be brought before the king or other justices assigned to this to his delivery according to the law. He has been imprisoned in Northampton Castle by order of Ros and his companions.
Nature of endorsement
His deliverance is to be viewed according to the law of the land before the same justices.
Places mentioned
Northampton Castle, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
William de Ros, Justice of the Peace.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1322 as a writ of aid was issued to Robert de Ardern who had been appointed to arrest Vere, and for Vere's lands in Northamptonshire to be taken into the king's hand on 16 March 1322 (CPR 1321-4, p.82). However, the petition is likely to date to late 1322 or more probably 1323 or 1324 when Vere would have had good reason to complain of the failure to deliver him from prison.
