Holdernesse to Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick: there are two points on which there can be no agreement with the landgrave. Firstly, that he is right to demand compensation for the loss and damage to his territories inflicted by the enemy. Secondly, that all the damage was inflicted because of his treaty with the king. He sends a copy of the treaty. The landgrave's interests would be taken into account at a peace settlement. Hesse would in any case have been subjected to the calamities of war because of the landgrave's attachment to liberty and the Protestant religion. However the king has agreed to an augmentation of his subsidy according to the enclosed memoir [SP 87/33/61]. This is not compensation. The landgrave has already received £40,000 Sterling. Brunswick is to give him the memoir and attempt to calm him. He also encloses an authorization for [Robert] Boyd to release the money. Dated at Whitehall. ff. 149-152
