Description

Memorial from House of Assembly addressed to the Queen, asks for a resident Lieutenant Governor for the full period of his appointment. Walker states this petition is due to the abuses against Indian indentured labourers and that the Administrator's conduct was completely satisfactory in dealing with these abuses; Baynes states that many in the House are planters who disapprove of his measures to protect immigrant workers, talks about the high mortality rate and that abuse and neglect causes deaths, gives specific examples, encloses a return of unindentured Indian labourers who have been admitted into the Colonial Hospital, their indentures of service having expired in the months of January, March, May, and June 1867; includes names if immigrants, gender, estate.
