R Irvine to [Under Secretary] Richard Potenger: he has heard from Versailles that notwithstanding the defeat [at Lagos Bay] the French are determined to mount an invasion with not less than 70,000 men. He feels the message is so important he has sent a cutter with it to Commodore Boys. He urges the destruction of Thurot's squadron and recommends a friend who would conduct British ships into Dunkirk roads. Dated at Flushing. ff. 189, 190
