R Irvine to [Under Secretary] James Wallace, quoting verbatim from a letter from La Rochelle. It states that ten English warships (it gives their sizes) are anchored in the roads half a league from the island of Aix. At the island were anchored twenty [French] merchant ships, four of the king's flutes, two ships of the line and four frigates. They all made sail, and with a favourable wind reached the river Charente, but there was not enough water, being low tide. Irvine has sent a tender with the news, and hopes for the destruction of the French ships. Dated at Flushing. ff. 36, 37
