Description

Petition from Roman Catholic inhabitants of Grenada protesting of unequal distribution by the Legislature of the Grant for Educational Purposes. Walker states 'This complaint has already been brought under Your Grace's notice in the papers which were transmitted with my despatch No. 74 … [CO101/119/5, 2187/1863] but I am unable to see what relief it is in Your Grace's power to give to the Petitioners. I would very willingly make an appeal to the Assembly in their support, but in the present temper of that body towards the Roman Catholic Priests, it would be perfectly vain. Your Grace will remember that at the general election of the present House, these Clergymen threw themselves as a body into the contest, and, having attached themselves to the losing cause, they and their flocks are now suffering in consequence.' Kortright states that their objection is that £140 is given to support Wesleyan Schools when the whole number of Wesleyans in the Island according to the census was 1,781 whilst £280 is given to Roman Catholic Schools with a Roman Catholic population of 19,337. Kortright states that the House of Assembly refused to receive the petition from the Roman Catholic priests even though there was nothing disrespectful in it and states that 'I have no hesitation in recording my opinion that the Roman Catholic Inhabitants of Grenada are a loyal and well disposed people.' Names attached to the petition [not included on this copy], 548 signatures from the Parish of St.George; 1148 signatures from the Parish of St. Johns and St. Marks; 804 signatures from the Parish of St. Patricks; 552 signatures from the Parish of St. Davids and signed also by Thomas B. Coyle, Parish Priest of St. George, Thomas Smith, Parish Priest of St. Davids, F. de Casta, Parish Priest St. John and St. Mark, and L. H. Gastillon Parish Priest of St. Patrick.

Lieutenant Governor Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright, forwarded by James Walker, Governor of Windward Islands, Grenada No. 89, Folios 137 - 148.
