Description

House of Assembly application for 1000 labourers from the United States and 500 liberated Africans. In the draft response, the Colonial Office replies with copies of correspondence between the Foreign Office and Colonial Office concerning the question of employing Free 'Negroes' and 'Persons of Color' from the United States in the British possessions. The references are: FO 14 October 1862, 10173/1862; CO 24 October 1862, 10173/1862; FO 1st November 1862, 10040/1862; FO 5November 1862, 10843/1862 and in a further Confidential despatch the following documents are sent: CO to FO, 25 October 1862 [with 100067/1862 Jamaica]; FO, 29 October 1862 [10357/1862 Jamaica]
