Description

Report on the Indian and African Immigrants who arrived on the ship Athlete; Walker states in reference to the African immigrants 'Your Grace will observe that the liberated Africans who arrived by the"Athlete" were all males. The Africans who were put on board the"Ullysses" to St. Lucia were also all males. On board the"Damietta" to St. Lucia there were 60 males and 57 females. In ignorance of the Rules which regulate the assortment of these people at St. Helena - guided as it probably is by the circumstances of their capture - it may be presumption to offer any suggestion on the subject. But, although on account of the readiness with which they naturally amalgamate with the Creole population of African descent, the same reasons do not exist as with the Coolies for securing beforehand an admixture of the sexes, still it might be a comfort to them on their first arrival to have the females so apportioned as that there should be a few at least of their own Country women amongst them'; Schedule of Enclosures, several enclosures including Certificate of Immigration Agent, Reports of Surgeon, statement regarding estates immigrants were to be sent to. See CO101/118/18, 4306/1862.
