Date
[1365]
Description
Petitioners
Alice Vaughan, widow of Thomas Vaghan (Vaughan).
Name(s)
Vaughan, Alice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Vaughan requests a writ to Sutton to answer whether he knows of any reason why two parts of the manor of Pontefract should not be seized back into the king's hand and delivered to her. The two parts were taken into the king's hand by the escheator following the death of her husband and the bishop as the escheator believed them to be held from the bishop in chivalry when they are actually held in socage. The king has granted the two parts to Sutton until the heir comes of age.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition be ordered into Chancery, and let justice be done.
Places mentioned
Poumfret (Pontefract), Middlesex
Stratford (Bishops Stortford), [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Thomas Vaghan (Vaughan), late husband of the petitioner
Bishop of London
Richard de Sutton
Hamo [Vaughan], son and heir of Thomas Vaughan.
Note
The grant to Sutton mentioned in the petition occurred on 12 October 1365 (CFR 1356-68, pp.314-5), and thus presumably the petition dates from soon afterwards.
