Reference
SC 8/80/3967
Date
[1300-1302]
Description
Petitioners
John de Seint Johan (St John); Thomas de Lucy.
Name(s)
de Seint Johan (St John); de Lucy, John; Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Allerdale, [Cumberland]
Inglewood Forest, [Cumberland].
Nature of request
The petitioners request remedy as they hold the wood of Allerdale in common so that none can make enclosures in severalty, but approvers have returned. The king came and wished to make approvements to Seint John's damage, and Lucy's disinheritance. Lucy's right was enquired of by Chancery writ which was returned, and Lucy had a writ to the approvers to cease their enclosure until otherwise ordered.
Nature of endorsement
The king wishes . . . in sufferance of his approvement as long as Seint John holds the manor of Cockermouth of the king's grant.
Note
The petition dates to the period 1300-1302. Robert de Clifford, justice of the forest was ordered with others to arrent the wastes of Allerdale and commit them to tenants in January 1300 (CPR 1292-1301, p.486). St John was not appointed to lieutenant in Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancaster until September 1300, and acquired his interest in Allerdale at the same time (CPR 1292-1301, pp.537-8). St John was dead by 1 November 1302 when his executors were granted that they could continue to receive the issues from several estates in which he presumably had had a life interest until Martinmas of that year (CPR 1301-7, p.69). Consequently the petition is likely to date to the period September 1300 to later 1302.
